The Men’s Spring Summer 2013 shows just concluded in Paris and we’ve been watching them very closely for the important trends that are going to evolve into what we’ll be wearing a year from now. Overall the shows were good. There were some strong trends that are very wearable and will move menswear forward, particularly with the continued use of color and pattern, as men feel more bold and empowered, and it is reflected in their clothes. There were also the usual runway theatrics that unfortunately scare a lot of people and wind up in the media with captions like “Who will wear this?” Remember fashion shows are designed to get designers and brands press and that’s why the styling is sometimes extreme. Don’t let that scare you off, but instead look for the wearable trends like the ones below.
IT’S ALL WHITE
White for spring–I know it’s not the most innovative trend, but what was interesting is that many shows featured segments of their shows with models in full head-to-toe white looks. When designers make a statement like that they’re telling us “White is going to be an important color, pay attention!” John Varvatos and Lanvin both went the “Saturday Night Fever” route and paired them with black. There were also several white Double Breasted suits, which is another trend we’ll talk about later.

COLOR MY WORLD
There was more color on the runways of Europe for Spring 2013 than we’ve seen in a long time, everything from pastels to bright fluorescent. We at Astor & Black like it somewhere in the middle, with colors that are saturated but not traffic stopping. Designers showed both full suits, like the coral one here from Paul Smith, along with another one from Zegna. This is also a great example of when it’s good to break up a suit, adding some color to khakis as we saw at Hermes, white trousers at Ferragamo or a bathing suit for a chic Mediterranean flair like we saw here at Brioni. Another interesting trend is that they were all shown with sneakers to create even more of a casual feel.

THE RIGHT STRIPES
The pinstripe is perhaps the most iconic menswear pattern we have. It’s usually discreet and woven into a flannel suit in a chalky line. For Spring 2013, stripes have been hitting the gym and are pumped up and bigger and bolder than ever before. We saw simple bold white stripes on blue as a suit at Hackett, and a sport coat at Neil Barrett, and more complicated multi-size and color stripes from Gucci, Canali and Berluti. Again, this is an opportunity to buy a striped suit in an interesting pattern and break up the suit.

DOUBLE DOWN
The double breasted suit has been showing up on runways for the past few seasons and if you haven’t pulled the trigger on buying one yet, this is the season to do it. While Double Breasted sport coats, like this beautiful plaid version from Alexander McQueen, was a big trend for last season, this season, it was much more about a Double Breasted suit. We saw a classic six button with three to close, which is the original Double Breasted model from Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton , while Corneliani and Giorgio Armani gave us beautiful, unstructured versions that had all the comfort of a cardigan sweater.

THREE OF A KIND
The three piece suit also returned to the runways for Spring 2013. We saw beautiful classic versions in patterns and solids from Marc Jacobs, Corneliani, and Paul Smith. What was even more interesting was when designers mixed up the colors on the three piece suit as seen in Dolce & Gabbana’s beautiful collection, which they showed on real Sicilian men they cast from the streets of Sicily. John Varvatos also showed an interesting take with the three piece suit, all in different colors and fabrics. It looks classic and tailored, but in a more casual way.

SHINE ON
The wattage in fabrics was definitely turned up this season as well, with almost every runway having an an element of shine for Spring. There were classic damask prints, shown as both a sport coat at Canali and some beautiful full suits from Etro. Dries Van Noten and Burberry Prorsum showed sport coats with shine as separates as did Zegna, who also gave us this beautiful blue version. No matter which version you choose, wearing one of these pieces will make your spring much shinier.
