When creating luxury cloth, Dormeuil adds dimension and complexity into the fabric color by employing top dye yarns.
When using pure camel hair, for example, the natural color of the fiber does the job and creates the natural camel color:
When using worsted merino wool, the natural color is ecru, so to create a different color, the fiber needs to be dyed.
Cloth manufacturers have three choices in the dyeing process; Piece dyeing, Yarn dyeing, and Top Dyeing.
Piece Dyeing
This is where fabric is woven from ecru colored yarn (not dyed) and then the ecru colored fabric is dyed one color in a dye “bath” to achieve the new color.
This method is fast and efficient and used by fast-fashion houses to respond quickly to trends. The consistency of the color and the color fastness is not as good as yarn dyeing though.
This is where ecru colored spun yarns are dipped into a dye bath to create a colored yarn that is then woven into the fabric.
This method is slower than piece dyeing but creates a fabric with better color consistency and colorfastness. Contrast yarns can also be employed to create 2 ply melange yarns.
The complexity of the color is not as rich or dimensional as top dyeing though.
This is where the fiber is dyed and then color blended into yarn to create a unique “complex” color that has many “live” colors working together – before being spun into yarn.
To create a camel color, vibrant yellows and white can be blended with camel shades to make the color dynamic and intense. It looks expensive because it is expensive.
